Iron Infusions (IV Iron) in Melbourne
The Skin Doctor | Longevity, Aesthetics & Wellness
Iron is the engine room of cellular energy. It is a critical component of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to your tissues, and is essential for mitochondrial health—the “power plants” of your cells. When iron levels are depleted, the impact is felt systemically: profound fatigue, “brain fog,” reduced exercise tolerance, and a visible loss of skin and hair vitality.
At The Skin Doctor, we provide doctor-led iron infusions as part of our commitment to medical longevity and wellness. Our service is designed for efficiency and safety, offering a refined clinical environment for patients who require rapid correction of iron stores.

Why Choose IV Iron?
While oral iron tablets are the traditional first step, they are often poorly absorbed or cause significant gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and constipation. An iron infusion bypasses the digestive system entirely, delivering iron directly into the bloodstream for immediate availability. (1-3)
IV Iron may be recommended if:
- Oral iron has failed to raise your ferritin levels.
- You experience significant side effects from tablets.
- You have underlying absorption issues (Coeliac disease, IBD, or post-bariatric surgery).
- You require rapid symptomatic relief due to a high clinical burden of fatigue.
Fast-Track: Requirements for Same-Day Treatment
We understand that your time is valuable. To facilitate a same-day infusion, please ensure you meet the following requirements:
- Recent Blood Tests: You must have results from within the last 3 months for:
○Full Blood Count (FBC)
○Iron Studies (including Ferritin and Transferrin Saturation)
- Ferritin Levels: If your ferritin is above 30 micrograms per litre, a same-day infusion is less likely to be clinically indicated unless specific medical contexts (such as pregnancy or severe symptom burden) are present. We recommend booking an appointment first(hotlink back up to ‘book a consultation first’) to discuss
- Referral: While we accept external referrals, they are not mandatory. We can perform the necessary assessment on-site. We are passionate about collegial care and getting a referral from your GP or other health provider does allow us to improve communication and your care.
Your Iron Infusion Journey
Step 1: Medical Assessment (20 Minutes)
Every journey begins with a consultation with the doctor. This is an essential safety step to:
- Review your blood results and medical history.
- Confirm that an infusion is the safest and most appropriate option.
- Discuss the clinical rationale and obtain informed consent.
- The “Why”: We prioritize identifying the cause of your iron deficiency (such as dietary factors or gut health) rather than just treating the symptom.
Step 2: Precision Administration (40 Minutes)
If cleared to proceed, our experienced nursing team will administer the IV iron in our dedicated wellness space.
- Safety First: We utilize specialized cannulation techniques to minimize the risk of extravasation (iron leaking into the surrounding skin). While permanent skin staining is a known rare risk of IV iron, our clinician-led approach focuses on high-precision delivery to mitigate this risk. (3)
- The Experience: Relax in a comfortable, private clinical setting with high-speed Wi-Fi and light refreshments while you are monitored by our medical team.
How to Prepare
To ensure a smooth and successful infusion, we recommend the following:
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours leading up to your appointment. This makes your veins easier to access.
- Eat: Have a normal meal before you arrive. There is no need to fast.
- Wear: Choose a top with sleeves that can be easily rolled up above the elbow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral? No. We welcome external referrals from your regular GP, but we also provide full assessments for new patients.
Is it safe? When delivered in a controlled medical environment with doctor oversight, iron infusions are a standard and safe medical procedure. We monitor you closely for any rare allergic reactions or administration issues. (3)
Will I feel better immediately? While some patients report an “energy lift” quickly, it can take 4-6 weeks for your body to fully utilize the new iron stores and for symptoms of fatigue to significantly improve.
